Who were they?

They were Vijay (Rohan Kapoor) and Chandni (Farah) — two names, two beating hearts, young, unknowing, innocent.

Where did they meet?

How and when did they meet ?

This was a secret known only to the fragrant breezes, to the flowing streams, to the singing valleys, to the echoing landscapes, to the swaying trees, to the vast and limitless earth, to the smiling skies — only they knew, none else. Love ... is not the expression of words — it is the expression of heartbeats. It lives in every human breath.

First ... which were the very first words which were uttered by their lips? Do you know this?

No. There were no words — only their eyes spoke the secrets of their hearts and their smiles took the form of their words. They became one. Chandni and Vijay, Vijay and Chandni, they were not two separate human beings any more — they were one.

And new lyrics, new hopes, new .dreams, new aspirations took birth from their union.

Then shadows fell on their love. Vikram (Sunil Dutt), it was his looming large form which cast this shadow on their love, Vikram who was Chandni's father. His wife had died, and he alone had given Chandni the love of both, mother and father. He loved his daughter dearly. He would do anything, make any sacrifice, for love of his daughter. But one thing he could not sacrifice for his daughter—that was his own ego. And it was this ego that became a wall separating the two innocent hearts of Vijay and Chandni.

Chandni was married to another man (Raj Kiran). The lyrics of love were submerged in the Shehnais of marriage: smiles were dissolved in tears; dreams scattered and the promises of love became just empty words.

Yet distances and barriers do not kill true love: they fan the flames of true love. Customs, tradition and social taboos — all these bonds and barriers were broken by the power of true love. True love is more lasting, more powerful than even time. Love takes another form too, in the happy-sad love-story of Vijay and Chandni: and that is the strange and secret love of Chandni's father Vikram for Maya (Rekha).

Silent love. Secret love. Hidden love. A love that was silent, secret and hidden, again because of social taboos. This love took the form of friendship. Were there no ties in their friendship? Relationships are as strong as the strength human beings give to them. Friendship can be immortal —and marriage can be a mockery, depending on the feelings and emotional intensity people bring to their ties.

There was no destination to the course of the friendship of Vikram and Maya. They were happy only in the present: only in the fact that they were together for the moment. They desired no more, because they dared not desire more.

But in between a man and a woman there is an infinite variety of limitations. Maya could enter Vikram's heart but she could not enter his home or his `Khandan'. She had no place in his world or his family. There were formidable walls dividing them — walls created by Society, by fear, by tradition. Even these very youngsters Vijay and Chandni became a sort of wall between Vikram and Maya.

How many distances there were separating these two pairs of lovers. Distances of compulsion; distances of helplessness; distances of society, of tradition.

Both relationships, both loves now reached a very strange threshold.

In front of both pairs of lovers now loomed large a very important question — question whose reply they knew. They knew their paths. They were aware of their destination; but they were helpless before circumstances.

Did their hopes get fulfilled? Did their dreams come true ? Did their melodies take the shape of truth? Were the `faasles' which separated them and divided them overcome once and for all? Yes: love can conquer distances. Love can wipe out all 'faasles' which divide human beings.
